The Santa Claus tradition of hanging stockings over the fireplace is based centrally upon the fly agaric mushroom itself, and that mushrooms in stockings were hung over the fire place to dry prior to consuming.

feministhistorian:

unhistorical:

Civil War-era Christmas cartoons by Thomas Nast (probably the most famous, most politically significant American cartoonist ever). Apart from being the first to depict the Republican and Democratic parties as their respective animals, exposing Boss Tweed, and creating Uncle Sam, Nast also introduced the modern version of Santa Claus. His version of Santa has changed only minimally over the past 150 years.

Sadly, Santa still looks like a major creeper…

Poor old Edith, we never seem to talk about her. Sybil’s not even IN the Christmas Special (s’far as we know) and she’s still part of the conversations.
Well…if you find a decapitated head in your stocking, now you know who left it.
HAPPY HOLIDAY’S, Y’ALL.

Crinolines. This unwieldy item of clothing has become one of the essential Deepings Doll shapes over the years, though our turner does have to seek out wider pieces of wood to get the distinct bell-shaped skirt effect.

We use the crinoline shape for many of our historical figures such as the Brontës, Mary Shelley, Lady Jane Franklin and Mrs Elizabeth Macquarie.  Also our Victorian bride, our Valentine range, and several Christmas dolls because what’s Christmas without Victoriana?

Every doll is different, individually painted, and it’s amazing how many different crinolines we have seen over the years.  Sadly, thanks to the nature of the dolls, which have to be turned in the round, we will never have a Deepings Doll sporting a bustle!
