Elizabeth I, painted as a princess about age 14 by lisby1 on Flickr.
Princess Elizabeth (later Queen) when she was about 14
What no one knows is that this famous painting was painted by a woman. Something quite radical for the time. Women painters were rare because to become a painter one had to go to a sort of boarding school with other boys to apprentice. The few renaissance female painters were taught by their fathers.
This very well known painting of Queen Elizabeth I as a princess was painted by Levina Teerlinc.
